For 23 years, the kickoff of the Christmas season in Terrell has been defined by “Breakfast with Santa” at the Methodist Day School and the “Christmas in a Small Town” Tour of Homes presented by the Social Science Club (SSC). Those long traditions came to a halt in the year of COVID-19. As fundraising for local charities is the mission of SSC, we looked to a new source of funds to support our community.

In 2020, SSC produced a beautiful coffee table book “A Tour of Terrell,” showcasing many of the remarkable inventory of historic and vintage homes that we are so fortunate to enjoy. As it is too soon for people to feel comfortable opening their homes to streams of visitors, we again had to get creative. So the members of SSC are preparing a cookbook that will be for sale this fall. “Then and Now: Great Food from Terrell, TX” will incorporate

family recipes from Terrell’s founding families along with reminiscences of meals when they were served. The book will be part history lesson; part creative updated cuisine.

We wanted to cast a net wider than our membership, so we are asking for submissions by local cooks of special dishes that bring back memories of times past in Kaufman County. We encourage your anecdotes or memories that make your pot roast, mac and cheese or coca-cola cake so special to your family and friends. Due to space limitations and duplications we may not be able to use each, but there’s always the possibility of a reissue down the road.

Please email your recipe to SSCrecipesubmission@gmail.com or mail it to Social Science Club, P.O. Box
